Football: Neymar injured as PSG reach French Cup last 16

PARIS (REUTERS) - Paris St Germain's Neymar was substituted in tears after suffering what appeared to be a right ankle injury as they beat Racing Strasbourg 2-0 in a French Cup, last 32 game on Wednesday (Jan 23).
The Brazil striker left the pitch after an hour after receiving a knock and twisting his ankle, three weeks before PSG travel to Manchester United for their Champions League last-16 first leg.
PSG, who are runaway leaders in Ligue 1, are already sweating on the fitness of key midfielder Marco Verratti, who is suffering from an ankle injury.
Thomas Tuchel's side prevailed at the Parc des Princes thanks to a goal in each half from Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria.
Elsewhere, St Etienne slumped to a 6-3 home defeat to Dijon.

Football: Klopp hails 'outstanding' Liverpool after Huddersfield rout

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp saluted his "outstanding" Liverpool title chasers after they stormed back to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 rout of Huddersfield on Friday (April 26).
Klopp's side scored their fastest Premier League goal ever through Naby Keita after just 15 seconds at Anfield.
Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both netted twice after that as Liverpool put relegated Huddersfield to the sword.
It was the perfect response to Manchester City's win at Manchester United on Wednesday, which had temporarily lifted Pep Guardiola's team above Liverpool into pole position.
City, now two points behind the leaders, can regain first place if they win at Burnley on Saturday, but Klopp was delighted with the way his players kept the pressure on the champions.
"We are happy with the points we have and now we are focused on the next game," Klopp said.
"We have a mindset that works and we try to create problems for each opponent by working hard.
"It's obviously an outstanding group of players, who did well against a Huddersfield side who are much better than the result shows.
"They had proper counter attacks so we needed to be patient and we scored wonderful goals."

Liverpool have won their last 10 matches in all competitions, their best winning run since May 2006 when they reeled off 11 in a row.
"We did everything to make the boys aware of how difficult the game could be. That goes out of the window after 15 seconds," Klopp said of Keita's perfect start.
"He is a complete midfielder. I don't know how many balls he blocked tonight."
Liverpool received a further boost as England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench for his first place in a year after a serious knee injury.
"It's brilliant, it's so good. It's over a year now. He's such a wonderful person. We are so happy for him," Klopp added.
"It's a perfect day, nothing happened injury-wise and we won."

Football: Manchester United's interim coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrives at training ground

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived at Manchester United's training ground on Thursday (Dec 20) to begin his role as caretaker manager after the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
United called time on Mourinho's two-and-a-half years at the club on Tuesday, with the club languishing sixth in the English Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool.
The 45-year-old Norwegian will be at the helm at Old Trafford until the end of the season, when the club will appoint a full-time successor. Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino is the current front runner.
The appointment of Solskjaer, who will take a break from his job as manager of Norwegian club Molde, was confirmed on Wednesday, with Alex Ferguson's former assistant Mike Phelan, 56, also returning as first-team coach.
The pair link up at United with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, who took training on Wednesday.
Solskjaer established his status as a club legend with his dramatic Champions League winner in 1999 to seal the treble. He cut his coaching teeth as reserve team boss.
He will take charge of his first match on Saturday against Cardiff, where he spent an unhappy spell as manager in 2014.

"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role," said Solskjaer.
"I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club."
Mourinho won the Europa League, League Cup and Community Shield in his first year at the club before United finished runners-up in both the league and FA Cup, but things unravelled during the early months of his third campaign at the helm.
The 55-year-old Portuguese had made his frustrations about the recruitment of players and the club's decisions clear over recent months, but did not return to the subjects in a statement released the day after his sacking.
"I have been immensely proud to wear the badge of Manchester United since the first day I arrived, and I believe all United supporters recognise this," he said in a statement to Britain's Press Association.

Football: Liverpool fans in Singapore and around the world in awe after improbable comeback

SINGAPORE - Liverpool fans in Singapore, like their counterparts around the world, were left breathless and in awe after the Reds' stunning comeback against Barcelona in Tuesday's (May 7) Champions League semi-final.
For civil servant Rudie Imran Masih, 42, the 4-0 win at Anfield was a collective effort.
"(Goalkeeper) Alisson was a wall, but the whole team was awesome," he said. "Their fitness levels were unbelievable, their pressing was relentless, and they didn't allow Barca to get into their passing rhythm. Everyone played out of their skins."
Philippe Aw, Singapore's under-15 football team head coach, described the result as "unbelieveable and amazing". A Reds supporter since 1983, he said Barca's left-back Jordi Alba was at fault for the first two goals and the timing of them (in the seventh and 54th minute) were psychological blows for the Spanish side.
Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin also chimed in to express his admiration for the Merseyside club. He posted on Facebook: "It's really a lesson for life isn't it? Just keep going and never give up. Teamwork. Heart. Resilience. And sometimes it just works out."
Some local restaurants were also swept up in the celebrations. Springleaf Prata Place and Casuarina Curry both offered free pratas at their outlets to customers who showed up on Wednesday (May 8) in a Liverpool jersey.
International sports stars and Liverpool supporters were equally thrilled. Former women's world No. 1 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki tweeted: ‏"Wow!!!!! No words!!! What a game!!!! Incredible!!! #ynwa" while American basketball great LeBron James wrote on Twitter: "AMAZING NIGHT FOR THE REDS. WOW #YNWA".

For former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, this was a match to remember. He told BT Sport: "When you talk about the great nights, this is the best ever. It's absolutely incredible.
"Before the game, we were talking about all the superlatives we have for Messi. We can run out of superlatives for Liverpool. It was deserved as well and that's the best thing about it.
"I'm so proud and so delighted to be part of Liverpool. Everything about Liverpool was brilliant."
Liverpool will face either fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur or Dutch champions Ajax Amsterdam in the final on June 1 in Madrid.
Aw said the five-time European champions will be favourites. He added: "First as a fan, and also as a coach, I think they can go all the way.
"To overturn a 3-0 deficit against a team like Barcelona will give them confidence to do it."

Football: 'Difficult' for Kane to play for Spurs again this season, says Pochettino

Football: 'Difficult' for Kane to play for Spurs again this season, says Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says it will be "difficult" for Harry Kane to play for Tottenham again this season after the forward suffered an ankle injury during their Champions League win over Manchester City.
The England captain, who suffered a "significant lateral ligament" injury in the 1-0 first-leg victory on Tuesday, is susceptible to ankle damage - this is his fifth ankle injury since 2016 and the second to his left joint this year.
"He was so upset after the game, it was a difficult moment for him," Tottenham boss Pochettino said ahead of his side's home match against already relegated Huddersfield on Saturday (April 13).
"We feel so disappointed and it was difficult to accept the situation," he added.
"He is now much better. He had the scan yesterday and he needs to see the specialist next week. He is in a good place because he is a positive guy."
When asked if he believes Kane could return this season, Pochettino said: "We'll see. There is five weeks, it is going to be difficult.
"Next week we are going to see with the specialist. We are going to do everything to recover him as soon as possible."
Kane has come back ahead of schedule on a number of occasions after his ankle problems, including this year, when he returned two weeks early.
There have been suggestions that Kane has rushed back previously when it would have been better to let the injury heal for longer but Pochettino said his problems were mostly down to bad luck.

RECURRING ISSUES

"Of course, if you come back and it happens again in the first game after injury, we can talk about whether we weren't right to force him to play," he said.
"He played a lot of games and the reason is not that. The reason is there was an action, an accident and it happened again.
"There is a lot of coincidence but we are talking about an accident. Nothing to do with his rehab of the past."
Kane is thought to have targeted a possible Champions League final on June 1 or England's Nations League semi-final against Holland on June 6 for his return to action.
And Pochettino would have no problem with allowing Kane to head off to the Nations League in Portugal even if he had not returned for Tottenham.
"You know me very well, after six years working in England that always my will is to help the national team. I am never going to tell a player not to go to the national team," he said.
"I think the first interest now is to try and provide Harry with the best condition and tools to recover as soon as possible and hope he can help us at the end of the season, and help England win the title they are going to fight for in the summer."
Spurs midfielder Dele Alli also fractured his left hand during Tuesday's match.
Pochettino is hopeful Alli will be fit for the second leg of the Chamipons League match but admits the England international is unlikely to face Huddersfield.
