LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur will be without Eric Dier and Serge Aurier for Sunday's (March 31) Premier League trip to Liverpool, manager Mauricio Pochettino has said.
Dier suffered a groin injury in England's 5-0 win over Czech Republic last week and was forced to withdraw from Gareth Southgate's squad for their visit to Montenegro.
"He (Dier) has been ruled out. It's not a big issue but he needs to recover from the problem he suffered against the Czech Republic with the national team," Pochettino told a news conference on Friday.
"One week, 10, days, two weeks. We'll see how it is going to improve. He was running today but we need to wait for the evolution (of the injury).
"Him, Harry Winks and Serge Aurier are going to be out for the weekend."
Midfielder Winks is continuing on-field rehabilitation after a groin injury, while right back Aurier is currently undergoing assessment after sustaining a hamstring problem on international duty with Ivory Coast.
Third-placed Spurs are facing a battle to hang on to a top-four Premier League spot, having suffered three defeats in their last four matches.
Pochettino believes the international break came at the wrong time for his players, who are eagerly waiting for an opportunity to redeem themselves.
"It's a bad thing because after the defeat against Southampton, the last feeling is not good and three weeks without competing becomes a little bit boring," the manager added.
"But that is the situation, we need to accept it and we cannot change that. I'm happy that we are going to compete Sunday and we are going to start a very busy period until the end. I am happy when we are competing."
Juergen Klopp's Liverpool are looking to preserve their Premier League lead and stay unbeaten at home this season, while Spurs are chasing a first win at Anfield since May 2011.

Football: Gabriel Jesus fires as Manchester City snatch top spot from Liverpool

LONDON (AFP) - Pep Guardiola welcomed Gabriel Jesus’ return to form as the Brazilian struck twice in a 3-1 win over Everton as Manchester City leapfrogged Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League.
Jesus hadn’t scored a Premier League goal for four months before opening the scoring midway through the first-half and bulleted home a header to double City’s lead early in the second-half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin briefly gave Everton hope, but Raheem Sterling came off the bench to make the game safe with his first touch and move City two points ahead of Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday.
“Strikers need to score goals,” said Guardiola of Jesus’s man-of-the-match performance.
“The difference today was that he scored as he was in better positions.”
Guardiola could even afford the luxury of leaving Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Aguero on the bench on their return from injury as the Catalan coach again shuffled his pack for the busy festive period.
But fears in recent weeks that City lack a predator in front of goal when Aguero is absent were quashed by two fine finishes from Jesus.
“My confidence is back because my family is here and it helps me a lot. I needed my family in this moment,” said the Brazilian international.
“This year it (the title) will be more difficult because the (other) clubs will play better. I think it is very important we have come back to first position.”

Caught cold

With temperatures approaching freezing in Manchester, City were nearly caught cold by a rare Everton break early on when Richarlison fired the first big chance of the game over from Lucas Digne’s cross.
“The biggest chance was our chance with Richarlison,” Everton boss Marco Silva said.
“Against these teams we have to be effective when we create opportunities to score.”
And Everton also played a big part in their own downfall at the other end when Jesus opened the scoring.
Yerry Mina’s hopeful punt gifted away possession and the Colombian then played Jesus onside as the Brazilian ran onto Sane’s pass to fire low past Pickford.
The England number one handed Liverpool victory in the Merseyside derby earlier this month, but Pickford wasn’t so charitable to City as he made an excellent save to prevent Riyad Mahrez doubling the hosts’ lead just before half-time.
The champions had to wait just five minutes after the break to make it 2-0, when a patient build-up again found Sane on the left and the German’s cross was met by a powerful header from Jesus.
Everton had barely offered any threat in the second period before they got back into the game 25 minutes from time, Calvert-Lewin’s header from a high-hanging Digne cross flicking off Fabian Delph and past the helpless Ederson.
Guardiola responded by sending on Sterling for Sane and in a week when the England international has bravely spoken out about the alleged racist abuse he suffered last weekend by Chelsea fans, he also made his mark on the field by scoring immediately.
“I think Raheem has handled the last few years in terms of situations and rumours, about him or his family or the colour of his skin very calmly,” added Guardiola.
“I admire him and appreciate that it’s not easy for him. He’s loved by all staff and in the locker room.”
Jesus was involved again as he freed Fernandinho inside the area and his cross picked out the unmarked Sterling to score a rare header.
De Bruyne then made his first appearance for six weeks – just his fourth in the Premier League all season, all of which have come as a substitute – after lengthy absences for two knee injuries.
Other than defeat to Chelsea last weekend, City have barely missed a beat without the Belgian, but the return of their player of the year in last season’s record-breaking campaign is an early Christmas present for Guardiola ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad on Jan 3.

Football: AC Milan may be banned from Europe as Uefa orders another Financial Fair Play probe

LAUSANNE (AFP) - AC Milan risk being excluded from European competition next season after Uefa on Wednesday (April 10) ordered another probe be carried out into the Italian club for breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
European football's governing body said in a statement that Uefa's Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) investigatory chamber had decided "to refer the case of AC Milan to the CFCB adjudicatory chamber as the club has failed to comply with the break-even requirement."
The period relates to the 2018-19 season and covering 2016, 2017 and 2018, the statement continued.
"This referral is not related to the decision that was made by the CFCB adjudicatory in December 2018 and covering the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons," it added.
The Serie A giants are one of several clubs to have been investigated for breaching Uefa's rules, whereby clubs cannot spend more than they generate by their own means.
Milan have fallen foul of the financial rules since they spent €200 million (S$304.8 million) on transfers in the summer of 2017.
The 18-time Italian champions won an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year, following a Uefa ban from the Europa League.
The club persuaded sport's highest court that their finances would improve under American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation, who took control last summer when former Chinese owner Li Yonghong forfeited on the loan he had taken to buy the club in 2017 from former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Milan were assessed by Uefa in December, when they were told to break even by 2021 or have their European ban restored.
The club are currently on target to qualify for next season's Champions League, which they have won seven times, as they sit fourth in Serie A with seven games to play.
They failed to progress to the Europa League's knockout rounds but have managed to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Cup.

Football: Liverpool thrash Newcastle 4-0 to extend Premier League lead

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool treated their fans to some Christmas cheer with a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday (Dec 26), extending their lead at the top of the table.
The win put Liverpool on 51 points at the halfway point in the season, six ahead of Tottenham Hotspur who hammered Bournemouth 5-0, and seven clear of champions Manchester City who lost 2-1 at Leicester City.
Returning to the club he led to the Champions League title in 2005, Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez picked his team with defence in mind, stringing five players across the back.
But defender Jamaal Lascelles inadvertently teed Dejan Lovren up for the opening goal, carelessly heading an attempted clearance into the path of the Liverpool centre back, who cracked home a fine half-volley in the 11th minute.
Newcastle managed to hold firm until halftime but within minutes of the restart they were two down as Mohamed Salah scored his 13th league goal of the season from the penalty spot following an innocuous foul on him by Paul Dummett.
Liverpool's enormous pressure threatened to give them a third goal at any moment, and it came when Xherdan Shaqiri stabbed home Trent Alexander-Arnold's low cross from close range in the 79th minute. Fabinho made it 4-0 by heading home Salah's corner.
Liverpool's fans burst into song as news reached the Anfield stands that Manchester City had lost at Leicester, giving the Merseysiders the Christmas gift they wanted as they chase a first league title since 1990.
"We just focused on ourselves and it's game by game for us. Every game is a final for us," Lovren said.
"We need to keep this momentum and after the next couple of games we will see where we are. Every game now matters," he added.
With little money available to spend in the upcoming transfer window, Benitez seemed barely able to conceal his frustration at Newcastle's situation.
"Obviously, we play against a very good team but there are two key moments in the game," the Spanish coach said.
"The first goal we made a mistake, and the second goal (was) a soft penalty that gave them control. For us, it was very difficult to react," he added.
Benitez must lift his side ahead of their visit to Watford on Saturday while Liverpool host Arsenal later on the same day.

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been included in Liverpool's squad for the knockout stages of the Champions League as he looks to make a comeback after being sidelined by a knee injury for over nine months.
The 25-year-old underwent surgery after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the semi-final against AS Roma last season, and the England international missed the World Cup in Russia as a result.
Although there were fears that he would miss the entire 2018-19 campaign, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp confirmed in December that he was ahead of schedule in his recovery and would play a role in the second half of the season.

'Stockport's Iniesta' strikes to repay Guardiola's faith

The Manchester City midfield is littered with stars such as Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva, yet it was 18-year-old Phil Foden who scored the winner in the 1-0 win over Tottenham yesterday.
The England Under-17 World Cup winner, who reportedly became a first-time father in February, headed home his first league goal in only his second Premier League start at the Etihad in the fifth minute.
He said: "Luckily I was on the line to tap it in, when the opportunity comes I just try to take it and help the lads. I'm just happy to help the lads today."
City manager Pep Guardiola said Foden is "more than ready. He scored a goal, he fought a lot".
He added: "Playing in the Premier League is an incredible experience for him, he's so dynamic and adds extra intensity into our game.
"I wanted more attack and aggression in the box. He has the capacity with his work and ability, today was tough against top players and he did well."
Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes that the manager had been under growing pressure to give the starlet the chance to shine.

"To play him in his first game or his second Premier League start in such an important game, there comes a point where Pep Guardiola thinks here it is," he told Sky Sports. "This is the moment I have to get him into the side.
"The sort of feedback I have been getting in the last weeks is that there is a feeling in the club that if they don't get this kid in, they might all stop having an academy."
The lifelong City fan, known in some circles as the Andres Iniesta of Stockport, came into prominence in 2017 when he won the Golden Ball at the Under-17 World Cup. He was also named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year that year.
The academy graduate made his City bow in the Champions League in 2017 against Feyenoord, and scored his first senior goal in the 3-0 League Cup victory over Oxford United the following year.
He also netted twice in the 4-1 win over Newport County in the FA Cup in February.

Of his playing style, Foden said: "I try to get into the box because that's where you score goals. I am an attacking midfielder, I will always try to be in the box, today it paid off."

Our job 'to be top'

Our job 'to be top'

PARIS • Even as football heads into the international break, Paul Pogba has been a busy man handling club and off-field affairs this week.
On Wednesday, the French midfielder backed his Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, telling Sky Sports that he wants the Norwegian to get the job on a permanent basis.
He also insisted that player power was not behind Jose Mourinho's sacking, citing "we were not winning" as the main problem.
Later that day, Pogba said he is happy in Manchester despite it being a "dream for every football player" to play for Real Madrid some day.
The 26-year-old, upon returning to France duty, has also made world champion rings, modelled on those in many American sports, for his World Cup-winning teammates.
For today, though, Pogba will be fully focused on what happens on the field as France face Moldova in their first Euro 2020 qualifier.
He insisted that the team will be just as motivated despite the trip to Chisinau being far from the glitter of a World Cup match.

France midfielder Paul Pogba is closely marked by teammate Olivier Giroud during a training session on Tuesday as they prepare for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Moldova and Iceland.
A GIFT FOR HIS 'FAMILY'
I consider them my family. It's a small gift from me. A small gesture like that is nothing because a World Cup is for life. This ring you can lose, but the World Cup you do not lose.
PAUL POGBA, posing with his France teammates and their diamond-encrusted rings (above), which feature the French Football Federation initials and the cockerel emblem on red, white and blue jewels.

Les Bleus have played six games - four in the Nations League - since beating Croatia 4-2 to win the 2018 World Cup, but today's Group H opener will be their first leading to a major competition.
"It's true that it's not so easy to come back and to have new goals right away after winning the World Cup," Pogba said during his press conference at France's training camp in Clairefontaine. "But we have to, it's our job. We have to be professional. Now we're going right into the competition, it's the qualifiers. We want to win, we want to be the first in the group."
France were drawn against Moldova, Albania, Turkey, Andorra and Iceland, who they face at the Stade de France on Monday. The top two qualify for the Finals to be staged across 12 countries.
France coach Didier Deschamps warned his team against complacency. "You must be wary. We know very well it will largely depend on us, but this Moldova side will try their luck at home," he said.
Moldova are ranked 170th in the world (France are No. 2) and have not won a competitive match - other than a pair of Nations League victories over San Marino last year - since 2013.
"There probably won't be much space. You get by with accuracy, movement and by mixing things up," Deschamps added.
The 50-year-old also revealed that he would like to remain in his job until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. His deal runs until June next year, but he admitted any extension would depend on the performance of his team.
"For me to be able to carry on until the next World Cup is obviously something I would not be unhappy about, but we'll see," he added.
"It's linked to results. But, before thinking about 2022, first come the qualifiers (for Euro 2020)."
Deschamps has called up Kingsley Coman after the Bayern Munich forward was omitted from the World Cup squad, and the 22-year-old is determined to play at Euro 2020.
"It's never easy, it can be easy if we make it easy," he told reporters. "We have to go into all the matches fully focused and stay motivated.
"I think the team is still hungry for trophies. But, to do great things, we first have to qualify."
In Group B of the Euro qualifiers, Cristiano Ronaldo has rejoined his Portugal teammates following a nine-month absence from the national team.
The 34-year-old Juventus forward was recalled by coach Fernando Santos for home matches against Ukraine and Serbia, having not played for his country since the World Cup. The reigning European champions, who are through to the Nations League semi-finals in June, kick off their campaign today against Ukraine before facing Serbia on Monday.

Spying common in Europe, says Guardiola

Spying common in Europe, says Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola has hinted that while his staff spied on opponents during his spells in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, there was no chance of that occurring under his watch in England.
Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa is being investigated by the English Football League after Derby spotted one of his scouts spying on their training session last week.
But the Manchester City boss has not lost any of his admiration for his friend Bielsa, who helped him during the early stages of his managerial career.
"My respect remains the same," he said at a press conference ahead of their Premier League trip to relegation-threatened Huddersfield today. "I admired what he did in the past, so why should I change my opinion?
"In other countries, everybody does that (spying). It is more difficult. It is private. But, in all the countries I have been, everybody does it.
"When we were training at Bayern, there were people in the little mountains with cameras and the opponent was watching what we did.
"It is the culture of the clubs. Not because you said, 'You have to do it'. It is the leagues. (But) I am not going to send anyone to spy on Huddersfield."

NOT SO STRAIGHTFORWARD
It's a little bit of a problem really because we don't know... We will have to, immediately adapt after five or 10 minutes.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on how his team must be wary today against a Huddersfield side with a new coach in charge.

Not like any advantage will be gleaned even if City employ subterfuge as their opponents currently do not have a full-time manager, with David Wagner leaving by mutual consent earlier last week.
Under-23 coach Mark Hudson will take charge until a permanent appointment is made and Guardiola admitted he "did not know exactly anything" as his counterpart was an unknown quantity.
Warning his men they have to adapt as quickly as possible today, he told reporters: "It's a little bit of a problem really because we don't know. Of course, we have some information about what he's done at the U-23 (level), but it's completely different (in the league).
"Whether they will play long or short balls, whether they will go four in the back, five in the back, one striker or two strikers? High pressing or low pressing?
"We will have to immediately adapt after five or 10 minutes, the players have to understand what is going to happen with the game."
The Spaniard also touched on additions, revealing that while City are unlikely to move for anyone in the January transfer window, the league champions will be targeting not only a central midfielder but also a left-back in the summer.
He has long spoken of City's need for an alternative to Fernandinho, given that they have no one who possesses like-for-like qualities.
But with Benjamin Mendy - who is close to returning after being out since November - having had two serious knee injuries in 18 months, Guardiola has highlighted the position as an area of concern.
He added: "We survived well last season, this season too, but we are thinking about that. At the end of the season, we are going to look at both options."
Leicester defender Ben Chilwell is thought to be on his shortlist.
