Football: Brighton to face Man City in FA Cup semi-finals after beating Millwall on penalties, Watford to play Wolves

LONDON (THE GUARDIAN) - Brighton reached their first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 after coming back from the brink to beat Millwall 5-4 on penalties in their quarter-final tie on Sunday (March 18).
Millwall's devastation was immense. The Championship strugglers had led by two goals with two minutes remaining, only for Brighton to force extra time thanks to goals from Jurgen Locadia and Solly March.
The equaliser was gut-wrenching from Millwall's perspective, as goalkeeper David Martin somehow allowed March's harmless free kick drift past him in the fifth minute of added time.
Neil Harris' side could hardly believe their luck and, although they managed to force a shoot-out, their bravery went unrewarded as Jake Cooper blasted the decisive kick over the bar.
The only consolation for Millwall was taking part in one of the games of the season.
The home fans heckled every loose touch from the visitors, howled at every tight refereeing decision and urged their team to demonstrate their impressive giant-killing credentials.
The ear-splitting din acted as a leveller, making the underdogs run faster and tackle harder, and Millwall were quick to test Brighton's nerve.
No wonder Chris Hughton looked concerned on the touchline for much of the first half.
Brighton's timidity in possession invited pressure and Lee Gregory, Millwall's selfless lone forward, went close in the 29th minute, hooking on to the roof of the net.
Brighton crept into the contest as the half wore on, Beram Kayal spurning two decent chances, but Millwall began the second half in a frenzy, almost taking the lead in farcical circumstances.
Mat Ryan's clearance hit Shane Duffy and bounced back towards his own goal, but the Australian managed to gather the loose ball before Gregory could force it into the empty net. Such carelessness only served to encourage Millwall.
Kayal threatened from the edge of the area, drawing a good save from Martin with a measured effort, but Brighton were struggling to tame their impertinent opponents.
They had nobody to slow the tempo in the middle and their task became even more daunting when the wind started to swirl and hail fell from the darkening clouds.
The conditions were not for the faint-hearted, but they posed no problem for Millwall.
The game was just how they wanted it, broken and erratic, and they had chances to break the deadlock, Gregory and Wallace unfortunate to be denied by Ryan after breaking beyond Brighton's creaking back four.
Hughton replaced Alireza Jahanbakhsh with March, but Millwall broke through in the 70th minute when Alex Pearce charged on to a corner from the left and sent a brilliant header into the roof of the net.
Nine minutes later, the Den went wild when Wallace surged clear on the right and fired a low cross into the six-yard box. Aiden O'Brien showed more desire than any of Brighton's defenders and turned the ball past Ryan.
Brighton looked done. They had offered nothing for most of the afternoon.
Yet it was Hughton's substitutes who made the difference. Locadia pulled one back with a venomous shot in the 88th minute and the Millwall's fans howled when the fourth official's board showed four added minutes.
Time was running out when Brighton won one final free kick on the right. Ryan ran forward to join his teammates and he had a good view of a woeful goalkeeping error from Martin, who must have wanted the ground to swallow him whole after allowing March's overhit delivery to slip through his hands and into the right corner.
Harris turned away in astonishment on the touchline, but Millwall's manager could not wallow in self-pity.
He had to work out how to lift his troops for extra time and Millwall pushed at first, James Meredith's fizzing shot drawing an excellent save from Ryan. Mahlon Romeo put the rebound over.
The locals found their voice towards the end of extra time, raising the volume in an effort to get their exhausted team over the line, but there was still time for Shane Ferguson to earn a red card after kicking Lewis Dunk.
There was enough time left for one for piece of controversy when Locadia's goal was ruled out for a tight offside call against Jose Izqueirdo.
The game went to penalties and, when Glenn Murray missed the opening penalty, Millwall were favourites. But Ryan saved one Millwall penalty and then saw Jake Cooper fire over the bar to send Brighton into the hat for the semi-finals alongside Manchester City, Wolves and Watford.

Football: Guardiola stays cool despite shock Man City defeat

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he was not disappointed by his players' effort despite suffering a surprise 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday (Dec 22).
Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side at the Etihad but Palace hit back with goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Andros Townsend followed by a Luka Milivojevic penalty.
Substitute Kevin De Bruyne gave City late hope but it was not enough and they remain four points behind leaders Liverpool after their first home defeat of the season.
"We started quite decent and created chances," Guardiola told the BBC. "We scored a fantastic goal and after they passed the halfway line they scored.
"The third goal... we cannot concede the penalty we conceded. We have to try and avoid it. Football is like this. Three shots on goal and three goals.
"It's complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson put his side's victory down to hard work.

"You don't produce that sort of performance by waving a magic wand or having a five-minute team talk - there's a lot of work that goes into that structure and we were excellent," he told the BBC.
"We are playing against a team with enormous skill levels and their focus, their ability to sustain attacks, is an example to us all."
He described Townsend's goal as "magnificent".
"I wouldn't say I thought he was going to score but he gave himself a chance. It will be a contender for goal of the week, if not goal of the year."

Football: Rafael Benitez's return conjures up the Ghosts of Christmas Past for Liverpool

Football: Rafael Benitez's return conjures up the Ghosts of Christmas Past for Liverpool

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Rafa Benitez's return to Anfield on Boxing Day is likely to stir memories of an unsuccessful Liverpool challenge for the Premier League title, but Jurgen Klopp is trying to focus on the present.
Klopp's Liverpool hold a four-point lead at the top of the table as Benitez, the club's manager between 2004 and 2010, visits with his relegation-threatened Newcastle United side on Wednesday (Dec 26).
There is a strong sense this could be the season that the English league trophy comes to Anfield for the first time since 1990, although recent history is offering mixed messages as to whether that will happen.
First, the good news for Liverpool: In eight of the past 10 seasons, the leaders on Christmas Day have gone on to win the Premier League.
Now, the bad news: On the two occasions it did not happen, the Christmas leaders were Liverpool. In 2008/09, Manchester United won the title; in 2013/14 it was Manchester City.
The late collapse to miss out in 2014 was perhaps the more immediately painful experience for Liverpool fans, but the failure of 2009, under Benitez, maybe offers more reason for regret. Both cases offer lessons that the Merseyside club, however, appear to have absorbed.
Brendan Rodgers' team of 2013/14 were not as balanced as the side current Reds boss Klopp has now.
While Rodgers had an outstanding attacking partnership, with Luis Suarez supported by a fully-fit Daniel Sturridge, his men were defensively suspect.
The then Liverpool manager had four senior centre-backs - Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure - yet struggled to settle on a first-choice pairing. A team who scored 101 league goals conceded a whopping 50; far too many for any side with serious championship ambitions.
The class of 2018/19 should avoid that trap; they have the Premier League's best defensive record this season, with only seven goals conceded.
Virgil van Dijk's influence has been key: the centre-back, signed for £75 million (S$130.5 million) from Southampton last January, has provided the defensive leadership that Liverpool missed badly following Jamie Carragher's retirement in 2013.
"He's very influential," Klopp said of Van Dijk.
"When I met him first, I thought I knew about his personality, I was pretty sure he would be like he is.
"After we lost 4-1 at Tottenham in October of last season, we started defending better and conceding less but then Virgil came in on top." Liverpool's solid defending means they do not have to score as freely to win games, although they are coming up with the goals when needed.
Mohamed Salah, after a quiet start to the season, is thriving after being switched from a wide position to a central attacking role. His total of 11 Premier League goals is only one fewer than Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the competition's leading scorer.
Yet despite that quality, avoiding the fate of the 2008/09 Liverpool team managed by Benitez, might still need a little luck to go the way of Klopp's men.
That side, containing a spine of Pepe Reina, Carragher, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, was strong enough to be champions, but suffered from a lack of adequate back-up.
Too many draws against lowly opponents proved costly too, with Stoke, Fulham, West Ham and Hull all coming away from Anfield with a point.
Certainly, while Liverpool have the versatile attacking talent of Xherdan Shaqiri to call on if they lose one of their main forwards, and good quality options in midfield now that Fabinho and Naby Keita have found their feet, they may struggle if anything happens to Van Dijk. Perhaps that is why Klopp has not ruled out signings in January.
"I keep the door open because if something happens then we will need to have a look, as there are monstrous numbers of games coming and that's really important that we can react," said the German.
"But it's all good, unless something dramatically changes."

Football: Ghana President forces Asamoah Gyan out of 24-hour retirement for Africa Cup of Nations

(THE GUARDIAN) - Asamoah Gyan has made a rapid U-turn on his decision to retire from Ghana duty and will now play at the Africa Cup of Nations, after being told by the nation's President that it is "in the national interest" that he reconsiders.
"A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded," said the former Sunderland striker in a statement. "I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the Afcon trophy."
Gyan turned his back on the team only 24 hours earlier after reportedly being dropped as captain but Mr Akufo-Addo was concerned that Gyan's decision had caused such uproar among the Ghanaian public that he personally contacted the striker and used his influence to change his mind.
"President Akufo-Addo spoke on the telephone with Asamoah Gyan, and informed him of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars," the spokesman for the president, Eugene Arhin, said in a statement.
"The President urged him, in the national interest, to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars, and make himself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah."
Having said on Tuesday (May 21) he was retiring to avoid fuelling "the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy", Gyan's love for the national team appears to have been rekindled after Akufo-Addo's telephone call.
"My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the Afcon trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana," said the 33-year-old.
Gyan, who played in three World Cups, is Ghana's record scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances and currently plays for Kayserispor in Turkey. It is unclear whether he will still have the captaincy at the Africa Cup of Nations or, as was widely reported in Ghana, it will be handed to André Ayew.

LONDON • Nigel Clough managed to retain his sense of humour after Burton's 9-0 trouncing by Manchester City, stating his hope that Pep Guardiola had "more than one glass" of wine on offer for the post-match drink.
The third-tier side's heavy loss in the League Cup semi-final first leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday ended their hopes of reaching the final, yet he remained light-hearted when asked what his opposite number told him at full-time.
"He said, 'Come in for a glass of wine'. I hope he's got more than a glass," said the visiting manager, who insists his team will use the return leg in a fortnight to celebrate reaching the last four.
"Do I wish we hadn't played? Not at all, we have made history in getting this far. It wasn't about tonight, it was about the achievement of getting here. We kept going right to the end, the City fans were shouting, 'We want 10'. And we stopped them, that's a positive for us."
Gabriel Jesus struck four goals as Kevin de Bruyne, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez were also on target against Clough's League One side, with victory leaving their visit to the Pirelli Stadium on Jan 23 a mere formality.
City manager Guardiola said his team's merciless approach in the game was a form of respect for their opponents and the competition.
City were 4-0 up at half-time but continued to rip apart their vastly outclassed opponents as they ran up the biggest margin of victory in an English Cup semi-final.
"If you forget to continue (attacking) you don't have respect for your opponent or for the competition," said the Spaniard.

  • 1986

Burton's 9-0 loss is the heaviest League Cup defeat by any side since Liverpool defeated Fulham 10-0 in the second round in September 1986. It is also the largest margin of defeat in the semi-finals of the competition.

"We spoke about it at half-time, to try to score more goals. That is the best way to respect the competition and opponent. The best way is to do what you have to do.
"The difference between the Premier League teams and League One teams, of course the quality of the players no doubt about that, but especially the rhythm. When you have high intensity and rhythm for 90 minutes, the physicality is higher and we scored quickly."
Guardiola also praised the club's achievement in reaching the last four, a run which saw them beat Premier League side Burnley and Championship teams Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough.
"Burton have had an incredible tournament. They have to be so proud, they did so well," he said.
Clough, son of Nottingham Forest's late European Cup-winning manager Brian Clough, added that he was not surprised at the outcome because of "the gulf between the two teams".
City were rightly lauded by Clough for their technical class and football rooted in total adventure but their work rate was also of the highest order.
They can outrun opponents as well as outpass them. They have the strength in depth to make changes, with only four regular first-teamers starting, and still be far too good for their opposition.
Ilkay Gundogan was doing what he does best, spraying around some exquisite passes when given time.
David Silva was gliding around, passing and moving, finding room and friendly feet, small but perfectly performing.
De Bruyne was supposedly easing his way back to full fitness but was in full Rolls-Royce mode between the boxes for an hour.
There had to be some sympathy for Burton's players facing such superior opposition. They had desperately wanted to cherish the memories of this League Cup semi-final and maybe, in time, they will.
Not at the final whistle on Wednesday, though. When Mahrez prodded in the ninth goal in the 83rd minute, they were just glad a 10th was not forthcoming.

Gonzalo "Pity" Martinez signed off from a memorable career with the Argentine club, including two Copa Libertadores triumphs, by scoring twice in the second half after coming off the bench in his last appearance before heading to MLS side Atlanta United.
Martinez increased River's lead in the 73rd minute and completed the thrashing with a chipped finish in stoppage time after Colombian striker Rafael Santos Borre had scored the third goal from the penalty spot.

Football: EPL bottom team Huddersfield condemn racist abuse of Philip Billing on social media

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield Town have condemned the racist abuse of midfielder Philip Billing, with the English Premier League strugglers saying they have reported the incident to the police.
The 22-year-old received online racial abuse late on Tuesday (March 12) from someone claiming to be one of the Yorkshire club's fans.
"We're aware of the racist message sent to Philip Billing over social media on Tuesday evening and have subsequently referred the case to West Yorkshire Police," said a Huddersfield statement issued on Wednesday.
"Huddersfield Town does not tolerate abuse of any kind and has a zero-tolerance stance towards any form of discrimination.
"We will give our full cooperation to the police to deal with this matter in the strongest possible way."
Denmark Under-21 international Billing responded by retweeting the message from the fan with a thumbs down emoji.
The midfielder has been one of the Terriers' better players this season but went off at half-time during last Saturday's home defeat by Bournemouth, amid speculation linking him with a move to another Premier League club at the end of the season.
The midfielder has produced several outstanding displays for the Terriers this season.
Town manager Jan Siewert said after the match he was unsure whether Billing was carrying an injury or not.
Saturday's loss saw bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield slump to a 15th defeat in 17 league games and they are 16 points from safety with eight matches remaining.

Football: Ex-FAS general secretary Winston Lee withdraws candidacy for AFC exco seat

SINGAPORE - Former Football Association of Singapore (FAS) general secretary Winston Lee withdrew his candidacy for one of nine seats on the executive committee members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), just before the Asian football body's congress in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (April 6).
The FAS said in a statement that Lee, 53, informed them of his decision on Saturday morning.
"With his withdrawal, the three remaining candidates for AFC Exco (Asean zone) will be voted in uncontested," said the FAS in a media statement.
The three are Hamidin Amin (Malaysia), Tran Quoc Tuan (Vietnam) and Chris Nikou (Australia).
Lee, who was a vice-president at the AFC, was embroiled in a Commercial Affairs Department probe that shook the local fraternity ahead of the FAS elections in 2017.
The investigation into a possible misuse of funds was sparked by the revelation of a $500,000 donation made by Tiong Bahru Football Club, through the FAS, to the Asean Football Federation (AFF) for a Football Management System.
A police raid was carried out on four locations - the FAS' Jalan Besar headquarters, and the clubhouses of S-League/Singapore Premier League club Hougang United, "sit-out" S-League club Woodlands Wellington and National Football League club Tiong Bahru FC.

All three clubs were connected to Bill Ng, who was then chairman of both Hougang and Tiong Bahru, and who unsuccessfully challenged Lim Kia Tong for the FAS presidency in 2017.
Lee was one of four people arrested - the others being Ng, his wife Bonnie and former FAS president Zainudin Nordin - but no charges have been brought in relation to the matter.
At Saturday's AFC congress, Sheikh Salman Sheikh Salman Ebrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family, was voted in as president unopposed.
A further five vice-presidents, six Fifa Council Members, five female executive committee members and a nine AFC executive committee members were also elected at the congress, which takes place once every four years.

But the Lions continued to display poor technique in the second half as Zulfahmi Arifin's casual pass in the 75th minute resulted in a fast break for the visitors, and Benjamin Totori beat Safuwan Baharudin and Izwan at the near post to restore the Solomon Islands' lead.

Football: Chelsea's Callum Hudson-Odoi says he will miss rest of season with ruptured Achilles

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi says he will miss the rest of the season after suffering a ruptured Achilles in Monday's (April 22) 2-2 draw against Burnley.
Hudson-Odoi limped off, helped by two members of Chelsea's medical staff, after sustaining the injury in the first half of the Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.
"Really gutted to end my season with an Ruptured Achilles, gotta work hard and try and come back stronger for next season!!!" Hudson-Odoi tweeted.
Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola admitted he feared the worst when he faced the media before Hudson-Odoi's tweet.
"Hudson: it looks a serious thing. Before I can tell you how serious, we have to wait until tomorrow. But it's not looking good. It's a problem with his Achilles tendon," Zola said.
The 18-year-old's injury is a major blow for Chelsea as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League either by finishing in the Premier League's top four or winning the Europa League.
They are fourth in the top flight and face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-finals.
Hudson-Odoi has also broken into the England team this year and his injury means he is likely to miss the Nations League semi-finals in June.
His injury completes a roller-coaster season which saw Hudson-Odoi strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich after growing frustrated at his lack of first-team action with Chelsea.
He eventually convinced Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri to start him in the Premier League towards the end of the season following a pair of impressive displays for England.
Hudson-Odoi's fine performances for Chelsea in recent weeks were one of the few bright spots in a turbulent campaign.
However, Zola expects France midfielder N'Golo Kante to recover quickly from a "contusion" to his ribs that forced him to come off at half-time against Burnley.

Football: Juventus lose their stripes as new kit unveiled

MILAN (AFP) - Serie A champions Juventus on Sunday (May 12) unveiled their new home kit for the 2019-20 season, which for the first time in over a century removes the iconic black-and-white stripes traditionally worn by players.
The club were founded in 1897, but players have worn black and white stripes of various types since 1903.
Next season Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will wear a half-and-half jersey with white on the right and black on the left.
The team will debut the new jersey against Roma in Serie A later on Sunday in Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
"The daring new design evokes the past, whilst igniting the future of the club through the evolution of the iconic black and white stripes," the team said.
"An unexpected flash of pink sits at the heart of the design and honours the first colour the club ever played in."
Juventus are the record Serie A winners with 35 titles, including the last eight in a row.
