Football: Manchester City stop the rot against Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - Manchester City showed they are willing to accept the challenge of Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title with a 3-1 win away to Southampton on Sunday (Dec 30).
Following shock defeats by Crystal Palace and Leicester, reigning champions City cut the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points ahead of their meeting with the Merseysiders at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.
But they allowed a limited Southampton side back into the game after a dominating start, which suggests there are still frailties for Liverpool to exploit.
David Silva put City ahead after 10 minutes but they passed up a number of chances to add to the lead and gifted Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg an equaliser in the 37th minute.
For a period, Pep Guardiola's side looked fragile, but a James Ward-Prowse own-goal and a header by Sergio Aguero just before half-time restored their confidence.
Saints' frustrations boiled over with a red card for Hojbjerg after a wild challenge on Fernandinho late in the game.
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl sprang a surprise in his team selection by giving a debut to 18-year-old former Chelsea starlet Kayne Ramsay at right-back.

City should have gone ahead in the fifth minute when Jack Stephens allowed Raheem Sterling to steal possession and set up David Silva.
But the City man tried to be too deliberate, with his shot blocked by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
But Saints could also have taken a more surprising lead after eight minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi's clever flick over the City defence sent Charlie Austin clear.
Austin's first touch, however, was dreadful and sent the ball into Ederson's grateful arms.
Instead of being a goal up, the home side were behind within a minute.
The left side of their defence was opened up with ease by a simple one-two, leaving Bernardo Silva clear of full-back Matt Targett and free to advance down the right. He had all the time he wanted to pick out the unmarked David Silva, who hit the ball first-time past McCarthy.
Riyad Mahrez then shot wide after a move that began with City playing a series of passes inside their own penalty area.
And Aguero squandered an excellent chance in the 25th minute, hitting his shot against McCarthy after Sterling had accelerated past the hapless Targett.
But overplaying at the other end almost proved City's undoing.
Ederson was nearly caught by Austin before dribbling round the striker. But he showed a mastery of the more conventional goalkeeping arts on the half-hour with a diving save to keep out Austin's glancing header from a corner by Ward-Prowse.
City did not heed the warning and Saints were level after 36 minutes.
Oleksandr Zinchenko was slow to see Hojbjerg closing in on him and the Southampton captain robbed the Ukraine defender and strode forward before lashing the ball in from 15 yards.

City double stuns Saints

Zinchenko could count himself lucky that referee Paul Tierney did not see his barge on Ward-Prowse after 44 minutes as a penalty.
And the home crowd were still complaining about that decision when City retook the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Sterling forced his way down the left and fired in a low cross that hit the foot of Ward-Prowse and zipped between the surprised McCarthy and his near post.
And the crowd's disbelief was complete three minutes into first-half stoppage time when Aguero rose unchallenged by Jan Bednarek to nod Zinchenko's cross under McCarthy.
In the second half both sides went through the motions. City had the points they needed and Southampton were happy to avoid further damage to their confidence and goal difference. But even then City could have had three or four more goals.
Sterling shot straight at McCarthy, Aguero hit the angle of the post and crossbar, and Mahrez blasted straight at the goalkeeper.
Frustration got the better of Hojbjerg, who launched into a scissors-style challenge on Fernandinho and was rightly sent off.

Schar's concussion sparks calls for Uefa probe

Schar's concussion sparks calls for Uefa probe

LONDON • Switzerland defender Fabian Schar says he cannot remember a collision that left him unconscious in a Euro 2020 qualifier last Saturday and the incident has led to calls for an investigation into why he was allowed to return to the game.
Schar was knocked out after a clash of heads with Georgia's Jemal Tabidze in the 24th minute of Switzerland's 2-0 Group D win and Georgian player Jano Ananidze rushed to his aid.
The 27-year-old recovered quickly after further treatment from Swiss medical staff, Swiss newspaper Blick reported, and was able to continue playing.
After watching a video replay of the incident, Schar said he had no memory of it.
"It looks awful. I can't remember anything," the Newcastle centre-back told Blick. "I was out for a few seconds. My skull is still humming. I've got neck ache and a bruise on my forehead, but it was worth it."
Schar, 27, has since been ruled out of Switzerland's qualifier against Denmark yesterday (this morning, Singapore time).
"I really wanted to play and, as always, give everything to the team and Switzerland," he said in a statement on the Swiss Football Association website, confirming he would be rested.
Britain-based brain injury charity Headway called on European football's governing body Uefa to investigate the incident.
Protecting players from concussion is part of a growing debate in sport. Global players' union FIFPro earlier this month criticised how professional football deals with concussion, while pointing out failings in current protocols.
"How many more players will have their careers... and lives and long-term health put at risk by the sport's inability to follow its own protocols?" the BBC quoted Headway chief Peter McCabe as saying.
"Put simply, the decision to allow Fabian Schar to return to the field of play after suffering a clear concussion was not only incredibly dangerous, but also a clear dereliction of duty. The player's comments after the match are also deeply disturbing and again show the lack of awareness and understanding among players.
"Uefa must immediately launch an investigation into the incident."

Football: Brazil held 1-1 by Panama in lacklustre friendly

PORTO (REUTERS) - Brazil drew 1-1 with Panama in a friendly on Saturday (March 23), one of the poorest results and performances by the five-times world champions since Tite took over as coach in mid-2016.
Panama had never scored against Brazil before, losing all four previous meetings and conceding 16 goals in the process.
Midfielder Lucas Paqueta gave Brazil the lead after 31 minutes, but Adolfo Machado equalised four minutes later with a looping header from what looked like an offside position.
Richarlison and Casemiro hit the woodwork in the second half for Brazil but as the game went on Panama looked happy to hang on for the draw against a side who enjoyed 78 percent possession.
Tite, with one eye on the Copa America on home soil in June, opted to give starts to several young players, with Paqueta winning a third cap, defender Eder Militao his second and Porto left back Alex Telles making his debut.
But without Neymar, who is recovering from a foot injury, they lacked the kind of inspiration the Paris St Germain forward so often provides.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea put their tumultuous League Cup final defeat behind them to revive their top-four hopes with a 2-0 victory over stuttering Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday (Feb 27).
Under-pressure manager Maurizio Sarri made the bold decision to drop goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in favour of Willy Caballero after the Spaniard's antics against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday when he refused to be substituted.
But Chelsea showed they are still behind the Italian with a deserved vicory over their London rivals thanks to Pedro's opener midway through the second half and a comical Kieran Trippier own goal late on.
Chelsea remained in sixth spot, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal having played a game less.
Third-placed Tottenham's slim title hopes now look extinguished after a second successive league defeat and they could have few complaints after a disappointing derby display.
Gonzalo Higuain was denied by the post early on for Chelsea while Spurs midfielder Harry Winks rattled the crossbar just before halftime.
Pedro fired Chelsea in front in the 57th minute, turning inside Toby Alderweireld before beating Hugo Lloris from a tight angle.
Tottenham huffed and puffed but shot themselves in the foot in the 84th minute when Trippier and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris got in a tangle and the full back's attempted back pass rolled in.
Tottenham are four points above Arsenal, who they host on Saturday, and five points above Manchester United.

Football: Salah fires Liverpool into Champions League last 16

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Mohamed Salah's delightful first-half strike gave Liverpool a 1-0 win over Napoli at Anfield on Tuesday (Dec 11) that sent them into the Champions League's last 16 and the Italian side crashing out.
Liverpool knew that a 1-0 win, or a victory by two goals or more, would be enough to seal a top two spot in Group C, and Salah was again the hero for the hosts, scoring what proved to be the winner in the 34th minute.
Napoli pressed for a leveller in the second half, with Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson denying Arkadiusz Milik in stoppage time, but the home side's resolute defence - which has conceded just six Premier League goals all season so far - stood firm.
Paris St Germain's 4-1 victory at Red Star Belgrade meant they finished top with 11 points while Napoli, who started the day leading the way, exited the competition as Liverpool snatched second spot on goals scored after both teams finished with nine points.
Jurgen Klopp stuck with the midfield three that struggled against PSG in their last Champions League match and it was Napoli who found their rhythm first, creating some promising openings early on.
Salah was then presented with a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock, but his touch let him down at the last moment while at the other end, Marek Hamsik could not find the target from a good position.
Kalidou Koulibaly was doing a fine job of marking Salah, until the Egyptian produced a moment of magic to score the only goal of the game, skipping past Koulibaly before slotting in from a tight angle - his 34th goal for Liverpool in 2018 in all competitions.

Liverpool really should have extended their lead in the second half, with Salah firing wide from a good position, before Sadio Mane was denied by a fine save from David Ospina.
Napoli saved their best attacking play for the latter stages, with Jose Callejon firing over from close range, before Mane somehow shot wide when he should have scored.
Milik almost broke Liverpool hearts right at the death, only to be denied by Alisson, who raced from his line to make a game-saving block.
