Football: Brazil soccer star Pele hospitalised in Paris, RMC Sport reports

PARIS (REUTERS) - Brazil soccer great Pele was hospitalised in Paris late on Tuesday (April 2) with a strong fever but his condition is not life-threatening, RMC Sport reported.
The 78-year-old was admitted as a precaution after attending an event in the French capital with France's World Cup winning youngster Kylian Mbappe.
A representative for Pele in Brazil could not immediately be reached for comment.
Pele was still in hospital on Wednesday afternoon, RMC reported, though in a possible sign he was making a recovery, he said on Twitter: "I met Kylian Mbappe and his parents last night in Paris at @Hublot event. We talked goals, World Cups and watches. Great company!"
Earlier, Mbappe had written on social media: "I had the chance this evening to spend a once-in-a-lifetime moment with the living legend @Pele."
Pele, revered by many as soccer's greatest player ever, is alone in winning the World Cup three times, first lifting the trophy aged 17.
The Brazilian was swift to praise Mbappe after he set last year's World Cup in Russia alight with his electric speed and goalscoring.

Mbappe became the youngest player (19) to score two goals in a World Cup game since Pele in 1958.
He also became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final.
"If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again," Pele tweeted at the time.
Mbappe replied: "The King will always remain King."
The Paris St Germain forward told Tuesday's event he would never match the Brazil great's scoring tally during his career.

Pele claims he has scored 1,025 goals.
"Even with the goals in playgrounds, goals on the PlayStation, I could never equal (that)," the 20-year-old said at the sponsors' event.
Mbappe and Pele had been scheduled to meet late last year but had to postpone, again because of Pele's health, French media said.

GLASGOW (AFP) - Rangers looked to strengthen their bid to win the Scottish Premiership title for the first time in eight seasons by announcing on Sunday (Jan 6) that they had signed former England striker Jermain Defoe in a loan move.
The 36-year-old, who has scored 162 goals in England's top flight, has joined from Premier League club Bournemouth in an 18-month deal.
Rangers, managed by former England midfielder Steven Gerrard, are currently level on points with arch Glasgow rivals and reigning champions Celtic at the top of the table.
"I'm delighted to be able to welcome Jermain to Rangers," said Liverpool great Gerrard. "He is an exceptionally talented striker and vastly experienced footballer who has scored goals at every club where he has played."
Defoe was not the only player on his way to Ibrox in a loan move from a south-coast Premier League club on Sunday.
Southampton midfielder Steven Davis returned to Rangers for a six-month stint, having previously made over 200 appearances in a four-year spell with the Gers that saw him win eight major trophies, including three league titles.
"He has previously captained the club and been captain for his country and Southampton, so we welcome yet another leader into our dressing room," said Gerrard.

Football: 'Angry' Thomas Muller questions Joachim Low decision after Germany axe

MUNICH (REUTERS) - Germany coach Joachim Low's decision to end Thomas Muller's international career has left the Bayern Munich midfielder "angry" and struggling to come to terms with the manner in which he received the news.
Low said on Tuesday (March 5) that the 29-year-old Muller and his Bayern teammates, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng, both 30, were no longer part of Germany's plans as they look to move on from their group stage exit from last year's World Cup.
The trio were part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup in 2014 and Muller said the sudden nature of the announcement had left a bitter taste.
"The more I think about it, the more the way it was done makes me angry," Muller said in a video on Instagram. "The coach's decision left me puzzled.
"A coach must make sporting decisions, I don't have a problem with that. But it's mostly the character of the decision that I don't understand. Mats, Jerome and I are still able to play at the highest level.
"The press releases of the German football federation and its president (Reinhard Grindel), prepared in advance, were from my point of view in bad taste and showed a lack of consideration."
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge questioned the timing of the announcement in a joint statement with the club's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.

"The last Germany international was played on Nov. 19," Rummenigge said. "We're disappointed that the players and the public have been informed of this decision some three and a half months later, before crucial games for Bayern.
"We were surprised this happened as part of an unannounced visit by Low and (team director) Oliver Bierhoff to Bayern."
Defending champions Bayern, who are second in the Bundesliga behind Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, host VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday before facing Liverpool in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie four days later.

Football: Rashford can be as good as Kane, says Man Utd boss Solskjaer

Football: Rashford can be as good as Kane, says Man Utd boss Solskjaer

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford has the potential to be as good a centre-forward as England teammate Harry Kane as the pair prepare to face off in the Premier League this weekend.
Rashford is expected to line up as the spearhead of United's attack when they face Kane's Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday (Jan 13) with both the team and striker on a hot run of form under the interim manager.
Rashford looks reborn under interim coach Solskjaer, scoring three times in the centre-forward position as United have rattled off four straight league wins since the Norwegian took over from the sacked Mourinho in December to close in on the Champions League places.
"He can become a top, top striker," said Solskjaer. "We can talk about Harry Kane and his class and I'm sure Marcus as well. He's got the potential to get up there.
"He's got frightening pace, he's now become stronger and can hold the ball up for us. He's a great link player."
Kane, 25, has set the goal-scoring standards in English football over the past three years - he was the league's top scorer in 2015/16 and 2016/17 before finishing runner-up to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah last season.
He won the Golden Boot at last year's World Cup and this season is joint-top scorer alongside Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 14 goals.
Rashford, 21, scored four goals in his first two senior matches for United after being been given his debut by then-manager Louis van Gaal in February 2016, and established himself as a regular squad member at Old Trafford.
However, he was regularly restricted to substitute appearances after Jose Mourinho replaced Van Gaal as manager later that year, and was often asked to play in a left-sided role, with Romelu Lukaku as the central attacker.
Since returning to United, where he played as a striker between 1996 and 2007, Solskjaer has spoken repeatedly of the need to return to the attractive, attacking football that they played for much of Alex Ferguson's reign.
A central part of Ferguson's philosophy was the development of players from the club's academy, which Rashford joined at the age of seven.
United have a proud history of producing their own talent, having included at least one youth-team graduate in every first-team matchday squad since October 1937.
Solskjaer sees Rashford's academy background as valuable, suggesting the forward has learned from a young age about the attacking style traditionally associated with United.
"Marcus has been brought up here," he said. "There were a couple of training sessions here (I watched) with the young kids, and Chongy (Tahith Chong) and Angel (Gomes) and him and Jesse, they played together in a certain way. He's a very exciting player to work with."
Solskjaer, loaned to United by Norwegian club Molde for the rest of this season, reiterated that there have been no discussions with United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the permanent job despite his desire to take the hot seat.
"No, we've not had that conversation," said Solskjaer. "You don't plan five or six months ahead and then suddenly change that after two weeks. No, nothing's changed. We just keep working every single day on improving the team here.
"I work with a fantastic coaching staff, I have to say. We'll put a plan together on how we want to look the next few months."

Football: PSG thrash Dijon in first outing since Champions League nightmare

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain shook off their Champions League hangover and resumed their canter towards another French Ligue 1 football title on Tuesday (March 12), as they cruised to a 4-0 win in Dijon.
Marquinhos, Kylian Mbappe, Angel di Maria and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored PSG's goals in their first outing since their disastrous exit from the Champions League in the last 16 at the hands of Manchester United last week.
The result left Thomas Tuchel's team 17 points clear of Lille in second place, and they still have a game in hand. With a French Cup semi-final to come next month, a domestic double remains a possibility, but any celebrations here were low key for a club whose priority has long been Europe.
"It was a first step to show that we could react like champions. It was a good reaction," said Tuchel.
"We still have objectives and we want to win the league and the Cup."
The PSG squad had been given three days off in the wake of their 3-1 home reverse against United, which eliminated them from the Champions League on away goals, the third season running in which they have gone out in the first knockout round.
Their return to training on Sunday had been marked by tensions between players and unhappy supporters hurling abuse, and it remains to be seen what kind of welcome they receive when they play host to Marseille this weekend.
"I want our supporters to show that we are all together. That is the only thing to do," said Tuchel.
"One VAR decision must not change that. The supporters are disappointed, like us, but now is the time to show we are together."
Referring to the Champions League exit, and the nature of it, the German added: "We must accept that result was an accident. Stay calm and maintain our confidence in this team."
A Dijon side battling to avoid relegation were the ideal opponents for PSG, with the visitors going ahead inside seven minutes when Marquinhos headed home from a di Maria corner.
The PSG line-up featured just four changes from last Wednesday's Champions League game, with Gianluigi Buffon and Thilo Kehrer dropping out along with the banned Dani Alves and injured Julian Draxler.
Mbappe got the second shortly before half-time, bundling in a Layvin Kurzawa centre from close range for his 25th league goal of the campaign.
The World Cup-winning striker later hit the woodwork, but that was after di Maria had curled in a free kick five minutes into the second half.
Choupo-Moting came off the bench to wrap up the win in stoppage time from a Thomas Meunier cross, as he got his first goal since his debut for the club in September.

Football: Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-0 to reach Copa del Rey final

MADRID (REUTERS) - A clinical Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-0 away in an intense Copa del Rey semi-final, second leg on Wednesday (Feb 27) as a Luis Suarez double helped them secure a 4-1 aggregate victory and a spot in the final for the sixth straight season.
A dominant yet wasteful Real ravaged their rivals in the first half while spurning a string of clear chances at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Yet Barca went ahead against the run of play in the 50th minute as Ousmane Dembele led a counter-attack and Suarez slotted his pass into the net.
Spearheaded by the pace and confidence of Brazilian teenager Vinicius Jr, Madrid continued to fly forward but failed to find the target.
Barca effectively killed off the tie when Raphael Varane bundled the ball into his own net as he tried to prevent Suarez reaching another cross from Dembele.
Suarez then earned a penalty and further humiliated Madrid by converting with an audacious 'Panenka', deceiving goalkeeper Keylor Navas by chipping the ball into the net.
La Liga leaders Barca will visit Real again in the league on Saturday.
The Catalans, who are bidding to win the trophy for a record fifth consecutive year, will play either Real Betis or Valencia in the final on May 25 at Betis' Benito Villamarin stadium.
Valencia host Betis in their second leg on Thursday, having drawn 2-2 in the first leg.

Strong support for 48 teams in Qatar but issues remain

Strong support for 48 teams in Qatar but issues remain
DOHA • A "majority" of football federations support increasing the number of teams playing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48, Fifa president Gianni Infantino said in Doha on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference after a three-day Fifa summit, which was attended by more than 70 federations, he revealed that the plan enjoyed widespread backing from different associations, but admitted there were doubts about its "feasibility".
"We will see," Infantino said. "So far, of course the majority is in favour because 16 more teams can participate, not only means 16 more countries with World Cup fever, but also 50 or 60 more countries being able to dream."
A decision will be made in March at Fifa's next council meeting, after a feasibility study is completed.
The world football governing body has backed a 48-team tournament to become the norm from 2026, when the World Cup takes place in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
But, with the 2022 host "open" to the idea of a 48-team tournament, Infantino is considering implementing the changes earlier.
He said: "Of course, the first partner with whom we are speaking to is the Qataris, the Qatar federation, the Qatari authorities."
However, any decision to extend the showpiece event would be beset by logistical and political problems.
The first World Cup to be held in the Middle East will take place over 28 days, not the usual 32 and, according to Infantino, the length of the tournament is set in stone.
Since the number of days cannot be changed, one option would be to host games across the region.
Yet that possibility seems remote as Qatar is at the centre of the worst diplomatic crisis to hit the Persian Gulf in years.
Since June last year, the country has been politically and economically isolated by its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
They have accused Qatar of supporting terrorism and being too close to Iran.
Doha has denied the charges, claiming its former allies are seeking to instigate a regime change and Infantino is well aware the embargo could prove problematic.
"Of course I am not that naive, not to know, not to read the news about what is going on. But we are in football, we are not in politics," he added.

PORTO • Spain's World Cup-winning captain Iker Casillas has told his fans that he is "feeling strong" after suffering a heart attack while training with Portuguese champions Porto on Wednesday.
Hospital medical reports revealed there was an obstruction of the right coronary artery for the 37-year-old, who has won all the major honours in the game, including the 2010 World Cup and three Champions League trophies.
The goalkeeper, who has already been ruled out of playing for the remainder of Porto's season, tweeted on Wednesday: "Everything under control here, it was a big scare. Thanks a lot for all your messages and your support."
Get-well wishes poured in from the footballing community after the news broke, with Real Madrid offering "all our support" for their former captain, their second-most capped player behind striker Raul Gonzalez (741).
The Spanish national team, of which Casillas has the all-time record of 167 caps, tweeted: "All the family at the national team and the Spanish football federation are with you. Get well soon."
Cristiano Ronaldo, his former Real teammate, also posted on his Instagram page an image of the pair together with the message: "Have strength, my friend. I hope you get well soon."
One of Spain's best-known sporting personalities, "Saint Iker" came through Real's academy and spent the bulk of his career there, making 725 appearances between 1999 and 2015 before joining Porto.
Spanish sports website Don Balon claims that the heart attack was probably the result of genetic issues because it is uncommon for people under 40 to suffer from the problem.
It also said that Casillas would have to consider hanging up his boots given the chances of the issue occurring again if he continues playing top-level football.

LONDON • Shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was announced as Manchester United's permanent manager yesterday, the British media reported that many of his players were already informed of the decision a day earlier.
None of them leaked the news but, for someone who had spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford as a player and has exceeded expectations as a caretaker manager the past few months, it was no surprise that Solskjaer would eventually return to a place he calls "home" for good.
The 46-year-old Norwegian, who has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, was appointed yesterday on a three-year contract.
"This is the job that I always dreamt of doing and I'm beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and, hopefully, deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve," said Solskjaer in a club statement.
"From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here."
Initially viewed as purely a stop-gap option while the club searched for an established manager, with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino widely reported to be their target in the summer, the former United striker has thoroughly impressed with his attacking brand of football and now has his reward.

  • 32

  • Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment at United in December, the Red Devils have won more points than any other Premier League team. They have 32 points from 13 matches, ahead of Liverpool (31 from 14).

After instantly turning around United's form - they have won 10 of their 13 Premier League games under him - he sealed his job with the dramatic comeback win at Paris Saint-Germain which earned the club a Champions League quarter-final clash with Barcelona.
His positive, inclusive approach to the players, supported by Alex Ferguson's former assistant Mike Phelan, transformed the mood in the club, a stark contrast to the atmosphere in the latter stages of Mourinho's reign, where fans had grown weary of the Portuguese's squabbles and defensive football.
That was one of the main reasons that United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had chosen the Norwegian to be the caretaker.

  • Solskjaer's to-do list

  • Key contract decisions

Besides getting goalkeeper David de Gea to pen a deal extension, Manchester United's new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must also turn his attention to Ander Herrera and Juan Mata, whose deals expire in the summer. Herrera, 29, has been a crucial player in defensive midfield under Solskjaer and, with French champions Paris Saint-Germain lurking, the United boss must convince the Spaniard to stay.

    Defensive gaps

With Antonio Valencia, 33, set to leave, United need a new right-back, especially since Ashley Young is nearing 34. Centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling have been rejuvenated under Solskjaer but a central defensive recruit is needed. Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar and Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld have all been linked with the club.

    Blooding youngsters

Solskjaer has continued United's proud tradition of promoting their talented academy players and he must do the same next season. Angel Gomes (18), James Garner (18), Tahith Chong (19) and Mason Greenwood (17) have played under Solskjaer in the absence of injured first-team players, after not playing at all under Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United, also restore a winning mentality at England's most successful club with a record 20 domestic titles.
"Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves," said Woodward. "More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club."
The news of Solskjaer's appointment took social media by storm, with former and current United players all showing their support.
Former defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said: "We've had a lot of change at the club in the last four or five years with different managers and it hasn't worked. Ole has brought a level of happiness and excitement back to the fans.
"There is a lot of hard work still to do in the coming months and years to get Man United back to where they were before.
"I saw Louis van Gaal the other day say that Solskjaer's football is like Mourinho's but winning. Van Gaal's football at United was the worst I've ever seen and Mourinho's was far better, even though it wasn't acceptable in terms of what the fans want to see."
Ex-goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, part of the 1999 treble-winning team with Solskjaer, added: "I have to credit the club for the timing and also the bravery for doing this.
"I think it's a fantastic appointment and it's a great opportunity to bring a lot of Manchester United back to Manchester United."
Current players like Chris Smalling and Marcus Rashford also expressed their delight on social media, saying "Ole's at the wheel, congrats boss!" and "Congrats boss (fist bump emoji)" respectively.
While the future of Phelan - who is contracted to Australian club Central Coast Mariners as their sporting director - is still up in the air, another of Ferguson's former assistants believes that Solskjaer has what it takes to achieve success.
"I've been impressed with Ole in press conferences. He's never on the defensive, never looks for excuses and he also addresses the things he is not happy about," Rene Meulensteen told Sky Sports.
"But the most important thing is he knows the club, he knows the DNA of the club he was part of."
Fifth-placed United, who are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification spots with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, host Watford in the league tomorrow.

Football: Leicester part company with Puel, Rodgers favourite to take over as manager in close season

(REUTERS, AFP) - English Premier League side Leicester said on Sunday (Feb 24) that they have parted company with manager Claude Puel, with the club sitting 12th in the standings.
The 57-year-old had been unable to get them out of a recent slump with the club losing five of their last six league matches, and a 4-1 defeat at home by Crystal Palace on Saturday compounded their misery.
"The club would like to thank Claude for his efforts in leading the team during his 16 months in the role and wish him well in his future career," Leicester, the 2015-16 Premier League champions, said in a statement.
"Assistant manager Jacky Bonnevay also departs with the club's best wishes.
"First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler, supported by the club's established backroom staff, will assume responsibility for the senior squad while the club begins the process of appointing a new manager."
Celtic manager and former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reported to be among the front runners to replace Puel in the summer, with the club set to install an interim manager for the remaining 11 matches of the season.
Puel was appointed the Foxes' manager in October 2017 when they were 14th in the standings and the Frenchman led the club to a ninth-place finish in his first season.
He had taken over from Craig Shakespeare after a year-long spell in charge of Southampton.
Although the club were in seventh spot at the turn of the year, they had a dismal start to 2019, suffering four consecutive home defeats.
Earlier this month, Peter Schmeichel, father of Leicester goalkeeper Kasper, said the club did not have a manager capable of getting the best out of the players and indicated that his son might be looking to move.
Leicester's Jamie Vardy had also been critical of Puel's style of play this season although Puel said there was no rift with the striker.
Their next game is a league trip to Brighton on Tuesday.
