Football: 'Proud' Son sparks Koreans to Asian Cup win as Iran fire blanks

ABU DHABI (AFP) - An effervescent Son Heung-min inspired title-chasing South Korea to a comfortable 2-0 victory over China on Wednesday (Jan 16) to finish top of their Asian Cup group.
Iran, joint favourites with the Koreans, also advanced as group winners despite being held to a goalless draw by bitter rivals Iraq, while Kyrgyzstan squeaked through on their tournament debut.
Hwang Ui-jo and Kim Min-jae were on target as South Korea, boosted by the arrival of their talisman, ran China ragged in Abu Dhabi.
Son won the penalty converted by Hwang and fizzed in the assist for Kim to help South Korea finish top of Group C with a perfect nine points as they look to end 59 years of Asian Cup hurt.
"Of course I'm a bit tired - I didn't expect to play for so long," Korean captain Son told AFP after completing 87 minutes despite a punishing run of 13 games for Tottenham since the start of December.
"But it's an honour to wear this red shirt and play for the national team. My first game of the tournament, clean sheet, 2-0 - it's a happy afternoon!"
Marcello Lippi's China finished as group runners-up having likewise already sealed their place in the last 16 by winning their first two matches.
Spurs forward Son, who played in the London club's 1-0 defeat by Manchester United three days ago, showed quick feet to tempt China defender Shi Ke into a rash lunge after 12 minutes.
Hwang calmly tucked away the spot-kick to send thousands of Korean 'Red Devils' fans wild at the compact Al Nahyan Stadium.
South Korea, who beat Asian Cup first-timers Philippines and Kyrgyzstan 1-0 in their opening two games, went for the jugular.
A Hwang Hee-chan rocket forced China goalkeeper Yan Junling into a fingertip save before Hwang Ui-jo curled an effort against the post.
The Koreans doubled their lead six minutes after the break when Son's corner was met by Kim's thumping header.
Son went down clutching his ankle after a meaty challenge from China's tattooed defender Zhang Linpeng late on.
But the 26-year-old appeared to suffer no lasting damage and was given a rousing reception when he trotted off three minutes from time.

TITLE DROUGHT

South Korea, who famously reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2002, have failed to win Asian football's most coveted prize since winning back-to-back titles in 1956 and 1960.
But the addition of the mercurial Son has clearly energised the 2015 runners-up, who suddenly look a very different proposition.
"We are very satisfied with the effort that Son made," said South Korea coach Paulo Bento, who is yet to learn the identity of his team's last-16 opponents.
"What's important in this moment is to enjoy this result and then go again."
China, Asian Cup finalists in 1984 and 2004, began the competition by edging Kyrgyzstan 2-1 and overpowering the Philippines 3-0.
But they were no match for South Korea and were lucky not to concede further goals in a lop-sided game.
"Let's be honest, the Korean team is much stronger than us - they're faster, technically superior and play with greater intensity," shrugged Lippi, whose side face Thailand in the last 16.
"They are one of the favourites to win the tournament - we have to accept that and focus on our next challenge."
Iran, themselves looking to end a 43-year title drought, fired blanks in Dubai but still topped Group D on goal difference from Iraq after thrashing Yemen 5-0 and beating Vietnam 2-0.
Elsewhere, a Vitalij Lux hat-trick sent Sven-Goran Eriksson's Philippines crashing out and Kyrgyzstan through from Group C as one of the best third-placed teams after a 3-1 victory.
The Filipino "street dogs" grabbed a late consolation through Stephan Schrock - their first-ever Asian Cup goal and one celebrated with gusto by their noisy fans.
Vietnam eased past war-torn Yemen 2-0 for their first points after a brilliant Nguyen Quang Hai free-kick and a penalty from Que Ngoc Hai.

Southampton 3
Arsenal 2

LONDON • Charlie Austin believes new Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has injected new life into the club, after the Saints shattered Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run to seal a shock 3-2 Premier League win at St Mary's yesterday.
Following fellow forward Danny Ings' first-half brace, Austin punished a howler from Gunners goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the 85th minute with his headed winner and his side clinched all three points.
The Saints twice took the lead through Ings, only for Henrikh Mkhitaryan's double to draw Arsenal level on each occasion.
But it was all over when Austin's predatory finish handed the Gunners their first defeat in 15 league games and brought a stunning halt to their longest unbeaten run in all competitions since 2007.

BREATH OF FRESH AIR
It's great. The gaffer's brought in new ideas and it's not just changed things in the changing room but around the whole club. The lads get a rocket and start expressing themselves.
CHARLIE AUSTIN, Southampton's match-winner, on new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl's impact at St Mary's.
BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE
We weren't concentrated through the 90 minutes. There were spells where we didn't defend well as a group. Southampton deserve credit, but it's disappointing by us.
ALEX IWOBI, Arsenal midfielder, on his side's off-colour display.

"The gaffer's brought in new ideas to not just the first-team changing room but the whole club," Austin said after the game.
"A new manager comes in with new ideas, all of the sudden the lads get a bit of a rocket and start expressing themselves and it just didn't work under (former manager) Mark Hughes, we just didn't get the right result.
"We have got a big Christmas coming up, with Huddersfield and West Ham here. We have to try and take six points from those."
Ings added: "As a club, we know the position we have put ourselves in, but we have shown today that we can really turn it around.
"If we keep showing resilience and hard work, we can turn it around. It shows we're moving in the right direction already."
Unai Emery's fifth-placed Arsenal had not lost since a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in August and the north Londoners' first setback since the summer leaves them three points behind the fourth-placed Blues (37), who beat Brighton 2-1 yesterday.
While it was a bitter afternoon for Arsenal, Southampton's first win in 15 matches in all competitions was cause for much celebration.
Hasenhuttl, taking charge of his first home game, danced a jubilant jig on the pitch at full-time after securing the maiden victory of his reign.
He watched Southampton lose 1-0 at Cardiff in his first match and, in a PR stunt this week, he sent free drinks vouchers to Saints season-ticket holders.
The Austrian, who left his role as Leipzig boss in May, was the toast of St Mary's after Southampton won at home in the league for the first time since April to move to 12 points and climb out of the relegation zone on goal difference above Burnley.
Meanwhile, first-half goals from Pedro and Eden Hazard were enough to seal victory for Chelsea, while Solly March netted a consolation for the home side.
For all his talent, Hazard has actually not scored in his past eight games for Chelsea before yesterday and the Belgian forward was quick to play down his goal drought.
"The most important thing is to win games. I just enjoy my football and that's why I'm on the pitch," he said. "I always play with the same ability and quality.
"As a winger and striker, I just try to enjoy my football."

Football: Molde owners will support me if I stay at Manchester United, says temp boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

(REUTERS) - Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said the owners of Norwegian club Molde sent him to Old Trafford with their blessing and asked him to try to turn his temporary stint at the club into a permanent role.
Solskjaer, an ex-United striker who played under former manager Alex Ferguson, has revitalised the team since taking over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, sparking a seven-game unbeaten run in the English Premier League.
United were 11 points off the top four when Solskjaer was appointed, but have since narrowed that gap to five points ahead of their trip to Leicester later on Sunday (Feb 3), making the Norwegian a strong candidate to be given the job permanently.
Solskjaer, who was loaned to United by Molde until the end of the season, said that the Norwegian club's owners, businessmen Kjell Inge Rokke and Bjorn Rune Gjelsten, would support him if he stayed at United.
"When I rang the owner and said United had called and that he always knew that this had been my dream, he said: 'Go over, enjoy yourself - and please don't come back'," Solskjaer told the British media ahead of Sunday's match.
"Both owners wished me all the best because they knew this is something I dreamed about. To get the backing from them was fantastic. If I go back to Molde, I will do my best for them - but it depends when I go back."
Solskjaer added that he would be happy to keep advising United's hierarchy on matters such as player transfers even if he did not become permanent manager, saying his knowledge of the club's culture gave him a useful perspective.

"I am always in the position to tell United who they should look at, and that will continue after the summer if I'm not still here," he said. "I will always advise the club, especially if they ask me."

Football: One year on, Coutinho struggling to justify record move to Barca

Football: One year on, Coutinho struggling to justify record move to Barca

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona shelled out a club record €160 million (S$250 million) to prise Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, yet one year on from his signing, the Brazilian is struggling to get a game while his former side are thriving in his absence.
Coutinho, the third most expensive player in the world behind Paris St Germain's Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, made a flying start to his Barcelona career with 10 goals in his first five months, giving the team a more direct outlet in midfield and an extra threat with his impressive long-range shooting.
But his impact has waned. He has failed to start any of the La Liga leaders' last three league games, falling behind Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal and French forward Ousmane Dembele in the pecking order.
Coach Ernesto Valverde has stopped short of publicly criticising the player, and neglected to say whether he had a preference for Coutinho or Dembele, the club's second most expensive acquisition at 105 million euros.
"It's a long way from being a problem having them both. It's an advantage," Valverde said last month.
"The coach is pro-Barca, he wants the team to win."
Valverde's recent team selections, however, may offer a clue to his thinking.

There was no place for Coutinho when Valverde fielded an unorthodox 3-5-2 formation in the recent 5-0 hammering of Levante, while he also left the Brazilian out when playing his usual 4-3-3 shape in victories over Espanyol and Celta Vigo.
The coach did pick Coutinho for a visit to Rayo Vallecano in November, but when he saw his side losing 2-1 at one of the weakest teams in the top flight, he hauled off the Brazilian and later brought on Dembele, who scored as Barca pulled off a dramatic 3-2 victory.
In the last three league outings, Valverde has continued to show faith in Dembele, despite the French youngster running into trouble for turning up late to training.
With the lightning quick forward forming a blistering attacking trident with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, and the highly-experienced Vidal slotting comfortably into the midfield three, Coutinho has been forced to make do with cameo appearances from the bench.
It is quite the fall from grace for a player many believed was signed as the long-term successor to Andres Iniesta, who ended 16 trophy-laden seasons with Barca last May to see out his career in Japan.
With Liverpool sitting four points clear at the top of the Premier League, Coutinho may be wondering on Sunday's anniversary of his transfer from Anfield to the Nou Camp whether it was quite the dream move he had imagined at the time.

Hard to keep Hazard: Sarri

Hard to keep Hazard: Sarri

LONDON • Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has accepted it will be hard to deny Eden Hazard a move to Real Madrid this summer, even if a reported £100 million (S$176.7 million) move is "too cheap" for the Belgium captain.
Hazard, whose deal will have just one year to run in the summer, showed why he will be one of the most in-demand players when the transfer window opens on July 1, scoring a fine brace as Sarri's men beat West Ham 2-0 on Monday to move up to third in the Premier League.
The Blues may be forced to cash in on their prized asset as he has so far refused to extend his contract and the club are unlikely to contemplate the risk of losing their top scorer on a free transfer next year.
While Sarri believes the £100 million fee - which will reportedly be enough to secure his services - being bandied about is "too cheap in this market", he also admitted that the decision to keep or move Hazard on is out of his hands.
The Italian said post-game: "We have seen in the last few windows every price.
"I'm sure the club don't want to sell him, but of course, we all have to respect his decision.
"He is in the last season of contract, if he wants to have another experience, we have to respect it. We will try in any way to convince him, but it is not easy."
The prospect of losing the forward is even more daunting for Chelsea as they are banned from signing new players due to a one-year transfer ban imposed by Fifa, and Sarri conceded the team would not be able to cope with his exit as "it is impossible to find another Hazard".

  • 28

  • Premier League goals (16 goals, 12 assists) Eden Hazard has been involved in, more than any other player this season.

Asked if Chelsea could afford to lose him, he added: "From the technical point of view no, not at the moment. At the moment, there is not another Hazard, because the level is too high."
The 28-year-old Belgian is putting all transfer talk to one side, insisting he is "focusing on Chelsea until the end of the season".
He said: "I want to finish in the (league's) top four and do well in the Europa League. We still have a lot to do and then we will see."
With trips to Liverpool and Manchester United to come in Chelsea's last five league games, much will depend on Hazard with Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain showing little sign of hitting form.
The 31-year-old, on loan from Juventus, stated his desire before kick-off to make his move permanent should Chelsea successfully appeal their transfer freeze.
But he had another night to forget in front of goal, making it just three goals, against already relegated Fulham and Huddersfield, since joining in January.
His form makes Hazard indispensable to Sarri, who admitted that when his star player is at his irrepressible best, Chelsea "can win against every team".
Separately, Danny Drinkwater was yesterday charged with drink driving after being involved in an accident near Manchester.
The Chelsea midfielder, who has not played this season except for a substitute appearance in the Community Shield, was reportedly with two female companions.

LONDON • Christian Pulisic has said that he wants to make the same impact that Eden Hazard has had at Chelsea and hopes to play alongside the Belgium superstar at Stamford Bridge.
The US international signed a 5½-year contract with Maurizio Sarri's team in January but was immediately loaned backed to Germany to finish the season at Borussia Dortmund.
"It is incredible to see what Eden can do," attacking midfielder Pulisic, 20, told the BBC. "He (Hazard) is a guy to look up to and what I would love to become.
"It is definitely a goal. Any player would be dumb not to want to be in the same team as him."
But the £58 million (S$101.2 million) signing appears unlikely to get his wish, with the Chelsea star linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The Belgian forward said earlier this month that he has made a decision on his future. Any announcement of a deal with Real, however, is likely to be delayed until the conclusion of the Europa League final against Arsenal next Wednesday in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Pulisic, who scored four times in 20 league appearances last season as Dortmund finished second to Bayern Munich, said he wanted to inspire young American footballers.

YOUNG GUN
I don't want to be looked at as someone who is the youngest to do this or that. I just want to be an established player and someone people respect, who is successful in this league.
CHRISTIAN PULISIC, Chelsea's new signing, who is both the youngest player to captain the US and score for them in a World Cup qualifier.

"I don't want to be looked at as someone who is the youngest to do this or that," said Pulisic, who is both the youngest player to captain the United States and to score for them in a World Cup qualifier.
"I just want to be an established player and someone people respect, who is successful in this league. It is completely new to me and something not a lot of American players have experienced."
Pulisic spent part of his childhood in England and relished the football culture.
"I soon realised how much people over here loved the game. To be in that culture and get thrown right in just grew my passion even more," he said.
"Every day after school I was on the court playing. I would go to games with my dad, including one at Chelsea. I don't remember how old I was but it would have been around the time Jose Mourinho was there.
"The fans were screaming and yelling. The atmosphere was fantastic. I had never seen anything like it."
Pulisic would likely have seen Petr Cech in action then and it was reported on Tuesday that the goalkeeper will return to the Blues as sporting director when he retires from playing after the Europa League final, according to Sky Sports and other British media.
The 37-year-old Arsenal goalkeeper responded to the reports by tweeting: "Despite the news today as I had already said to everybody before, I'll make (a) decision about my future after the last game. Now my sole focus is to win the EL with @Arsenal."
Chelsea were not immediately available to comment on the media reports.
Former Czech Republic international Cech, who won 124 caps, spent 11 seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League and Europa League, four Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups before moving to the Gunners in 2015.
He had previously announced that he would retire from playing at the end of this season.
