Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named Manchester United caretaker manager, says club 'is in my heart'

LONDON (AFP, THE GUARDIAN) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was on Wednesday (Dec 19) named as English Premier League football club Manchester United's caretaker manager until the end of the 2018-19 season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club looks for a new full-time manager.
"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role. I'm really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club," the 45-year-old Norwegian told United's website.
The former United striker will be assisted by Mike Phelan, 56, another of the club's former players, who previously spent 14 years on the club's coaching staff, including five as the No. 2.
Solskjaer takes over following Mourinho's sacking on Tuesday. His first game in charge is Saturday's trip to Cardiff, the club with whom he had his only previous experience of Premier League management.
The Norwegian, who has been managing Molde, took Cardiff down to the Championship in May 2014. On being sacked the following September, his record was 16 defeats from 30 games and five wins, of which three were in the top flight.
Solskjaer is fondly remembered at Old Trafford for scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich. Just over a year ago, he described United as a "dream" job in an interview with United.no, the Manchester United Supporters' Club Scandinavia.

United's executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, said: "Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season."

Coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna continue on the first-team staff. United are sixth in the Premier League with 26 points, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, and 11 from a Champions League berth.

Football: Lionel Messi shines as Barcelona survive scare to see off Rayo and retain 7-point lead over Atletico

BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi created a goal and scored another, as Barcelona came from behind to beat struggling Rayo Vallecano 3-1 at home on Saturday (March 9) and stay seven points clear at the top of the Spanish La Liga table.
Rayo, who have now lost their last 12 games against Barca, took a shock lead midway through the first half when forward Raul de Thomas - who is on loan from Real Madrid - ran past two defenders before arrowing a shot into the bottom corner.
The Madrid side's unlikely lead at the Nou Camp lasted just a quarter of an hour and ended when Messi whipped in a free kick for Gerard Pique to appear unmarked and head home.
Barca won a penalty early in the second half when Luis Suarez was fouled and Messi converted to put the league leaders in front and the Uruguayan forward made sure of the points with a simple finish from close range in the 82nd minute.
Coach Ernesto Valverde started without Ousmane Dembele and Ivan Rakitic but fielded an otherwise first-choice starting XI even with a Champions League last-16 second leg against Lyon coming up on Wednesday.
The win restored Barca's seven-point gap over nearest challengers Atletico Madrid, who earned a 1-0 victory at home to Leganes earlier.
Rayo are 19th in the standings and two points from escaping the drop zone as the pressure mounts on coach Michel.

Football: Chelsea goalie Kepa fined one week's pay, apologises for League Cup final mutiny

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has been fined a week's wages by the club after defying manager Maurizio Sarri and refusing to be substituted during the English League Cup final on Sunday (Feb 24).
"Although there was a misunderstanding, on reflection, I made a big mistake with how I handled the situation," he said in a statement on Chelsea's website, which announced the fine.
The club simultaneously published a statement from Sarri in which the manager said the pair had spoken following the row, which occurred in extra time of the match which Manchester City won on penalties.
"He has apologised to me, his team-mates and the club," said the Italian.
"It is up to the club if they want to discipline him according to the club rules, but for me this matter is now closed."
Sarri, who reacted furiously when Kepa refused to be substituted after needing treatment in the closing stages, said the incident had been a "misunderstanding".
"There was a misunderstanding yesterday but (Kepa) realises he made a big mistake in the way he reacted.
"The team performance as a whole was extremely positive and it is a shame to see how this incident has overshadowed our efforts in what was a very competitive cup final."

Kepa, the club's record £71 million (S$126 million) signing from Athletic Bilbao, refused to leave the field to be replaced by Willy Caballero. Sarri then stormed off down the tunnel in anger before returning.
"I wanted to take the time today to apologise fully and in person to the coach, to Willy, my team-mates and to the club," said the 24-year-old Spaniard, whose fine will be donated to the Chelsea foundation.
"I have done this and now I want to offer the same apology to the fans. I will learn from this episode and will accept any punishment or discipline the club decides is appropriate."
Sarri is under increasing pressure, with Chelsea losing four of their past seven games in a run that has seen them drop to sixth in the Premier League, crash out of the FA Cup and lose the League Cup final.
There is little time for Sarri and his team to regroup, with third-placed London rivals Tottenham Hotspur visiting Stamford Bridge on Wednesday (Feb 27) in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino will have been glad of the three weeks between Tottenham's last league game and the Champions League final, but it leaves him with some big decisions to make for the big game.

Football: Man City blast 'false accusations' as Uefa opens spending rules probe

ZURICH (AFP) - Uefa on Thursday (March 7) announced they were opening an investigation into whether or not Manchester City broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, a breach that could lead to a devastating Champions League ban.
However, English champions City insisted the accusations against them are false and that they welcomed the opportunity to clear their name.
German magazine Der Spiegel, using material purportedly obtained from the whistleblowing outlet Football Leaks, alleged in November that City had set up sponsorship deals to circumvent regulations limiting how much money owners can put into a club.
"The Investigatory Chamber of the independent Uefa Club Financial Control Body has today opened a formal investigation into Manchester City FC for potential breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations," said a Uefa statement on Thursday.
"The investigation will focus on several alleged violations of FFP that were recently made public in various media outlets."
City responded immediately by saying they supported the investigation and that they had nothing to hide.
"Manchester City welcomes the opening of a formal Uefa investigation as an opportunity to bring to an end the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails," the club said in a statement.
"The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club's published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record."

City had earlier responded to Der Spiegel's claims by saying there had been an "organised and clear" attempt to damage the club's reputation.
A ban from Uefa competitions, including the Champions League, is a potential punishment if City are found guilty of FFP breaches.
City were fined €60 million (S$90 million) and subjected to squad, wage and spending caps in a 2014 settlement agreed with Uefa following a previous breach of the rules.
City coach Pep Guardiola has always insisted that City would accept a ban but does not believe it is likely after discussions with the club's UAE owners.

QUESTIONS FOR PSG, MILAN

"We will not be banned, no. That's what I think because I trust in my chairman, with my CEO, what they have explained to me," he said.
"If it happens, because Uefa decide that, we will accept it and move forward."
City are not the only European heavyweight to be caught up in claims of breaking financial fair play rules.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain quashed reports they could be forced to sell either Kylian Mbappe or Neymar in a bid to circumvent eventual FFP sanctions.
Qatar-owned PSG, who splashed a combined total of more than €400 million in 2017 for Brazil star Neymar and France World Cup winner Mbappe, blasted allegations as "totally false and ridiculous".
Former European champions AC Milan were warned in December that they risk being excluded from European competition if they fail to "break even".
Milan had already been banned for a year from the Europa League due to breaching FFP regulations before winning an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year.
But Uefa said the former seven-time European champions again face suspension from continental competition in future seasons "should the club not be break-even compliant at 30 June 2021".

LONDON • The first anybody knew about it was the tinny roar from the Wolves end.
It was the news every Liverpool supporter had been dreading and, football being the sport of schadenfreude, there was not a great deal of sympathy coming from the Wolves fans who, for only one day, had chosen to serenade Manchester City, champions of England once again.
That was the moment when everyone associated with the Reds had to confront the harsh realities of trying to overhaul a side of City's durability, knowing now that 97 points were not going to be enough and that a season of sustained brilliance was not going to get its happy ending.
Not in the Premier League, anyway.
A few minutes earlier, the updates from Brighton had told a desperate, longing crowd that City were losing. Now everything had been turned upside down.
The Wolves fans were singing about City striker Sergio Aguero and, cruelly, "You nearly won the league". Later, the same thing happened all over again - twice, in fact - and by that stage, everybody knew that Liverpool's 29-year wait for a league title was not going to end.
Of course, Liverpool being Liverpool, they were determined not to let everything fizzle out with a sudden, damp silence.

  • FINAL DAY

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, last year's top scorer, shared the Golden Boot with teammate Sadio Mane and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who both scored twice on the final day.

Anfield was far too proud to sulk and so was Jurgen Klopp. The Liverpool manager told Sky Sports: "I know people will find always something (we could've done more).
"We had lucky moments, City had lucky moments, so to get 97 points is not always about outplaying opponents. This is a first step, that's how we see it - it's the majority of players that we had last season, so if we take the same step again... what a season that will be.
"In the past, always when I had a successful team, the players were picked off - that won't happen this time. There isn't anyone crying here. You always use one step as the basis for the next step."
Liverpool won for the ninth consecutive time in the league, courtesy of Sadio Mane's brace to mark the first time in 39 years they have gone successive seasons without losing a single fixture on their own ground.
They have equalled their club record of winning 30 times, the last time that happened was in 1979 over a 42-match season, and there is the small matter of a Champions League final to come.
Ultimately, though, the only detail that mattered here is they had finished second - 97 points being the best runners-up finish in league history - but second, all the same.
At the final whistle, it could not have been easy for Klopp and his players to try to disguise all that raw disappointment, especially on a day in which Liverpool, for 21 minutes, had been top on the table.
Mane's opener arrived in the 17th minute and, in that first half, it was difficult to comprehend how the afternoon would finish, or what could be believed and what could not.
Briefly, there was pandemonium as Brighton led City 1-0 on 27 minutes. The next update came barely a minute later - a goal for City. Soon afterwards, there was another one, and the next updates were all grievous setbacks.
All the Liverpool players could really worry about was making sure they did their part against Wolves, whose seventh-placed finish is the best of any promoted side since Ipswich ended in fifth in 2001.
But they kept going. Mane's second came nine minutes from time, putting him level with teammate Mohamed Salah in a three-way tie with Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the Golden Boot on 22 goals, while Alisson won the Golden Glove award with 21 clean sheets.
That, however, was not the prize the trio wanted. Afterwards, Salah told Sky Sports: "We did everything this season, we lost only one game. We got 97 points.
"I say congratulations to City and we will fight again next season for this trophy."
Elsewhere, Chelsea took third place following their goal-less draw at Leicester and Tottenham are fourth after a 2-2 draw with Everton.

Football: Messi hat-trick restores Barcelona's La Liga lead

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi continued his sublime form by netting his 31st La Liga hat-trick as Barcelona thrashed Levante 5-0 on Sunday (Dec 16) to regain their three-point lead at the top of the table.
The 31-year-old Argentinian arrived in Valencia having scored two free-kicks in last weekend's derby thumping of Espanyol. He took his goals tally for the season to 20 after a virtuoso display, while also teeing up Luis Suarez's 35th-minute opener and Gerard Pique's late fifth.
Barca were under pressure after Atletico Madrid and second-placed Sevilla had both moved level on points with the Catalan giants.
But after resting his key stars for their final Champions League group-stage match against Tottenham in midweek, coach Ernesto Valverde saw his refreshed side cruise to a third straight league win without conceding a goal.
Levante started the game brightly and visiting goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was forced into an early save by Ghanaian Emmanuel Boateng.
But Barca did not take long to start moving through the gears, with Messi curling wide from long range before testing Oier Olazabal in the Levante goal with a free-kick.
Just seconds after Boateng hammered a left-footed strike against the crossbar, the reigning Spanish champions broke the deadlock as Messi jinked through a mesmerised home defence and picked out Suarez who volleyed home.
But Levante, who had ended Barcelona's dreams of going through last season's La Liga campaign unbeaten with a remarkable 5-4 victory in the penultimate game, came close to a quick response as Jose Luis Morales fired over.
The match was all but ended as a contest when Messi bore down on goal two minutes before half-time and drilled low into the net.
He wasted little time after the restart to add his second in the 47th minute, sweeping home Jordi Alba's clever cutback, before completing his treble with a simple tap-in from Arturo Vidal's square pass on the hour mark.
Messi has scored five goals in two league games since finishing only fifth in the voting for the Ballon d'Or earlier this month.
A bad evening for Levante worsened with 14 minutes to play, as left-back Erick Cabaco was sent off for a reckless lunge on Ousmane Dembele.
Centre-back Pique added further gloss to the scoreline in the 88th minute, rampaging forward to collect Messi's pass, before keeping his cool and rolling the ball home.

Sevilla keep up the pace

Sevilla reclaimed second place earlier on Sunday as second-half strikes from Ever Banega and Pablo Sarabia sealed a 2-0 win over Girona.
Pablo Machin's side are unbeaten in seven league games since a 4-2 loss at Barcain October.
The hosts had to wait until the 55th minute to break the deadlock, when striker Andre Silva was tripped in the area by Girona defender Juanpe.
Argentinian Banega stepped up to send visiting goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz the wrong way from the penalty spot.
The points were wrapped up only nine minutes later, as Wissam Ben Yedder cut the ball back for the onrushing Sarabia to slide home his 14th goal of the season in all competitions.
"In the first half they (Girona) were very good," said Machin.
"They were very organised and had good chances, when (Sevilla goalkeeper) Tomas (Vaclik) was splendid.
"In the second half we were the better team." Elsewhere, Villarreal were plunged further into crisis as Samuele Longo's 93rd-minute strike saw them held to a 2-2 draw at bottom club Huesca.
Villarreal, who replaced Javier Calleja with Luis Garcia Plaza as coach in midweek, are only one point and one place above the relegation zone.
Real Betis eased to a 3-1 win at Espanyol to move into fifth place after a third successive league victory.
Giovani Lo Celso scored and missed a penalty for Betis, with Cristian Tello also on the scoresheet.
Espanyol, who led the table earlier in the season, have lost five straight matches to slip into the bottom half.
